linuxadmins At my kids school I have been the defacto IT guy for the last six years on a volunteer basis. I have been slowly migrating the office computers to linux desktops, and have a small server running for backups.
Last week I turned in a proposal to create a paid IT position, and then submitted a resume for that position. It sounds like I convinced them so I have been doing some research on various things I would like to implement.
I do not know the first thing about LDAP and directories, but it sounds like I can run a server that has everyone's user account and home directory on it, and then those people can log in to any of the computers using their account that authenticates on the server and opens their home directory. Does that sound right?
Another question: Would it be a reasonable use of an LDAP Directory to create an actual directory of people (parents and students) at the school? Or should I use an MySQL database for that?
I am just brain-storming at the moment, and have some online classes about LDAP I will be reviewing, but any input from you experienced IT guys would be welcome.
